The Value of Building a Solid Team
"Here lies a man who was able to surround himself with men far cleverer than himself."
-Andrew Carnegie’s suggested epitaph for himself
My husband Michael and I are off for vacation this coming week, and I’m excited to take a 10-day break. Starr Oldorff, our Operations Manager, will also be on vacation for much of the same time.
You might be asking how Starr and I can both be OOO (out of office) at the same time. What about our clients? Will there be a business when we get back? This is exactly why I have always believed in building a great team! A team that supports each other and has everyone's backs. We pride ourselves on clear communication and care about one another.
Per Andrew Carnegie’s quote above, I recently wrote a blog where I discussed our team:
“I work with people who know what I don't know, people who are smart, insightful, innovative, and take initiative, people who can complement and help me scale the organization we are building together.”
Understand this doesn’t magically happen. We have planned for these vacations. I notified my clients months ago about my days out of the office. We have worked ahead on our podcasts, marketing, meeting and schedule planning, etc. Don’t get me wrong—I love planning, yet with both Starr and me being out simultaneously, we went the extra mile.
I can not emphasize enough how important it is to have the right team in place to grow.
The “right team” may include employees, independent talent, consultants, agencies, or a mix of all four. Your role as a leader is to provide the right skills, tools, and environment for success.
Some people may be working onsite and some remotely. I’m proud to report we are truly globally staffed. The company is based in New York City with team members working in Fayetteville NC, Panama, and the Philippines! Communication is facilitated by team status meetings every week, with specific team meetings also scheduled weekly.
It's extremely important to understand that, as the company expands, you need to simultaneously build your team. Again, the “right team” will include people with different skill sets to meet the specific needs at various stages of company growth.
With all these dynamics in place, you'll soon see how efficiently and seamlessly the company can be run.
So it is with Slater Success. I can take time off for vacation, broaden my cultural horizons with foreign travel, and then return to work with recharged batteries and the confidence that the company hasn't missed a step while Starr and I are gone.
Look for vacation pictures from Puglia, Italy in this space soon. Arrivederci! ☺________________________________________________________________________________
