Know Your Numbers (Revisited)
The Story Behind the Numbers
I tell my clients this all the time: your numbers aren't just data. They're a story. And the real question isn't what the numbers say - it's what story they're telling about your business.
We first explored this in our November 2025 article, "Numbers Tell A Story — Are You Reading Yours?" Today, we revisit this story to identify business practices worth considering.
Every firm is writing the same story across four chapters: finance, marketing, sales, and team.
Your financials tell you where the profit really lives, where money quietly leaks out, and whether your pricing or fee structure still matches what you're trying to achieve.
Your marketing data tell you whether your message is landing, whether the right targets are finding you, and whether what you're spending is actually working.
Your sales activity tells you where deals are slipping through the cracks, where opportunity is going unclaimed, and where one simple follow-up could change everything.
And your team? That's the chapter that ties it all together. It's a story about productivity, communication, and culture - because no strategy, however brilliant, survives without the right people sitting in the right seats.
Facing these metrics moves you past initial fear toward a scalable foundation - a theme we emphasized throughout 2024 as we examined Swiftonomics and celebrated the Influence of My Mother.
Here's the truth: most clients didn't go to school to learn how to run a business. They went to study their specific field, such as law, finance, computer science, or engineering. But once you own a firm, you're wearing a second hat - you’re the CEO. And that means you need to know what your numbers are actually saying about your business's health and growth.
As we noted in our 18th anniversary newsletter in April 2026, healthy scale requires leaders to strip away emotional drama and consistently ask: "What Do The Numbers Show?“
I often see leaders check their financials only twice a year – once during tax season and again after something has already gone wrong. They usually know how much money is coming in but not how much they are actually keeping. They keep a close watch on billable hours but rarely calculate how much inefficiency is costing them.
This is when I like to ask, "How much money could be slipping away without anyone noticing?”
The Shift I'm Seeing This Year
Good news: there’s a shift I'm seeing take hold this year - firms are asking that question earlier. Not at year-end. Not at tax season. Now, at the end of the third quarter, while there's still enough runway left to rewrite the ending.
Q4 Pulse Check: What Story Are Your Numbers Telling So Far?
So, with three-quarters of the year behind us, now is a great time to stop and ask yourself: Do your numbers reflect the story you want to tell by December 31st?
If it's not - don't panic. Take that as your cue to look closer while you've still got time to shift direction before the year wraps.
We can help. Bring whatever materials you have, even if they are not finished. Together, we’ll work out a clear and practical plan for the rest of 2026.
Thinking strategically can change how you lead. Instead of just reacting, you’ll start guiding your business forward.
