How To Take A Vacation And Run A Business
The summer season is known for being the biggest vacation time of the year. My Instagram feed has been overflowing with vacation photos and wonderful vacation spots from my fellow colleagues, clients, and connections.
It's no surprise that people take advantage of this time to travel and unwind. However, for business owners, the idea of taking a vacation may seem daunting. Many CEOs struggle with the notion of stepping away from their businesses, fearing that it could lead to setbacks or missed opportunities.
In reality, taking a vacation can be incredibly beneficial for both personal well-being and business growth. As a business coach who works with numerous leaders and CEOs, I consistently encourage my clients to take vacations. Stepping out of the daily grind provides an opportunity to recharge, clear the mind, and gain fresh perspectives and creative ideas.
I have learned through my own experience that sometimes; you have to take a step back to propel yourself forward.
Great Businesses Comes From Creative Ideas
It was seven and a half years ago when my husband and I went on a vacation trip to Nicaragua to celebrate our 30th anniversary. I was relaxing by the beach while reading a book. After a few minutes, my husband noticed me while I had my book pressed tightly against my chest, and he asked, "What are you thinking? I know you and I see the look on your face, the one like you have an idea!”
I had always known that I had a burning desire to take my business to a whole new level. In those days, I found myself working with early-stage entrepreneurs, but deep down, I knew it wasn't where my heart truly belonged. I knew my business could go way bigger. And I knew that I had to do this business differently, but my everyday busy schedule had kept me trapped in the daily struggle.
It wasn't until that vacation that I could clearly envision how to transform my business into something greater. Stepping away from the daily routine allowed me to see another perspective and a bigger picture – a picture filled with exciting opportunities and new avenues for growth.
When I was on vacation, my creative mind got some space to breathe and stopped being consumed by my to-do lists, and opened myself up to new perspectives.
What It Looks Like to Take a Break from Business
We're often so preoccupied with our to-do lists that our creative zone remains dormant. But during those peaceful days on the beach, inspiration struck, and creative ideas came in.
The biggest challenge, however, is trusting that your business will thrive while you’re away. This trust comes from building a strong support system within your business. I realized this firsthand when an emergency called me away from my business for quite some time in 2001.
My business partner had my back, ensuring that the company continued to run smoothly, proving that stepping away doesn't mean everything falls apart. Building a strong support team is vital in scaling your business.
This summer, I am loving watching my clients' travel posts from Portugal, Croatia, Paris, London, Canada, and Colorado. I just booked a trip for myself this coming fall. I have always believed you build a great business to live a wonderful life.
Consider the power of a vacation. Step away, unwind, and let your creativity flow. Trust your team, build a support system, and plan for a transformative journey that could unlock the true potential of your business.
