The Independence Of Being A Leader And A Business Owner

Happy Independence Day! As we celebrate the annual commemoration of nationhood and great freedom, we should always remember the heroic people who took the risk and sacrificed for our country's independence and honor.

In terms of independence, there is a great deal of independence required to be a leader and a business owner.

I remembered my journey towards how I took the independence of taking the risk, going for it, and becoming not only a successful entrepreneur, but an internationally-bestselling author, speaker, podcast host, and professionally-certified business coach of today.

Before becoming the CEO of Slater Success, I owned and operated a successful printing company. I recalled having an annual meeting with my accountant, attorney, and husband to go through both of our businesses.

During the meeting, I told the group about how I wanted to venture beyond the printing industry to start a consulting and coaching company. It was a dream of starting a new business, a dream of creating something I was truly passionate about.

Printing was a good industry at the time and a good business. Yet, I felt no passion for the business. I felt the connection to the people I worked with and I knew there was something more for me.

Now, it is a risk to step away from a 7-figure successful business to step into an industry where people were not familiar with what coaching was and consulting was done by the big globally known firms.

Our accountant then stood up and yelled at me about how I shouldn't and couldn't do it. The accountant gave me numerous reasons why I shouldn't do it, and clearly said I did not know what I was doing in this decision, how I did not truly know the money the company brought in, and the expenses ahead of me with the college for my children on the horizon.

Have the Independence of Taking the Risk and Go for It

Do you know that feeling where you're just sitting there while someone doesn't want you to do something about your dreams?

As I sat there, I kind of wondered, Is he right? Can’t I really do it? Am I really capable of leaving my comfort zone and investing the time, money, and effort necessary to start on a new journey in the hopes of making a living as I do with my current business?

Yet, in his rant, I became more sure of myself and my decisions. I knew when I set my mind to anything, I can accomplish it and navigate any obstacles that came my way as I had done that numerous times running a printing company and as a working mom.

There is a risk in every new venture and in many decisions we make as leaders. I believe in the motto, “When there is a will, there is a way.”

Then, our attorney, a brilliant man, got up and told the accountant to stop talking. The attorney then said to me, “Ivy, I have an old client who was in the same position as you, in which she also wanted to launch a new business. Do you want to talk to her?”

Right then and there, I decided to take a massive step forward toward my dreams, take a risk, and have a great deal of independence to be a leader and a new business owner.

It takes guts to walk away from the living I was making from the printing business and took the risk to get that independence. Today, I’m an Internationally-bestselling author, speaker, podcast host, and professionally-certified business coach.
