What Does Legacy Mean to People?

Legacy. It's a word we use often, but rarely stop to define.

At its core, legacy is the answer to a truly profound question: 

  • What will remain after I'm gone? 

For most people, it lives in the memories they leave with others, the values they pass on, and the impact they made on the world around them. For business leaders, it goes even deeper — it's the culture you built, the people you developed, and the institution you leave stronger than you found it.

The leaders I most admire didn't just build companies. They built movements —institutions, cultures, and people who carry the mission forward in ways even the founder couldn't have imagined. These are organizations that continue to grow and evolve long after the founder steps back.

Legacy isn't something that happens to you; it's something you intentionally create and shape.

Personally, my clearest lesson about legacy didn't come from a boardroom. It came when I lost my mother recently. In the outpouring of love that followed, I found myself asking the leaders in my community a simple but powerful question: 

  • What legacy are you leaving behind? 

The response was overwhelming. Because when we strip away the revenue targets and the org charts, that question is what every leader is really wrestling with.

Legacy begins personally before it ever becomes professional.

The way you show up in your relationships — with your family, your team, your clients, your community — that is your legacy in motion in real time. I've developed every phase of my career, from running a seven-figure printing company in New York City to founding Slater Success in 2008, on one unwavering belief: relationships are the hallmark of all sustainable success. You cannot separate the leader you are at home from the leader you are in the office.

You cannot create a lasting legacy without a succession plan.
