Setting Intentions For 2024

Happy New Year!

What are your plans for the year 2024? Do you have a sustainable growth strategy in place?

I often ask clients to imagine a scenario where it's the end of 2024, and they raise their glasses to toast their accomplishments during the past year. Everyone is filled with excitement and pride. What accomplishments will you be celebrating?

Set Intentions

To have a successful business year in 2024, it is important to set intentions and take actionable steps toward achieving those intentions. I make it a point to work with my clients to create strategic plans and break them down into actionable and doable steps for their organization.

A few questions to think about in starting your strategic plan are:

  • What is working well in your business in the past 12 months?

  • What is NOT working well and why?

  • From here, be open to embracing what you can learn and grow from.

Look to the horizon and see your vision for the next 1, 3, and 5 years.  To keep it simple, what would you like to be toasting/celebrating in 2030?  Yes, this is six years out, yet we keep it simple.  What are the steps to take in 2024 that will build you toward your success in 2030?

Then we get to work!  Be strategic and identify your SMART goals for the year.

SMART Goals

Goal setting was popularized in the 1980s by George T. Doran. He published a paper in the November 1981 issue of Management Review (AMA Forum) titled "There's a S.M.A.R.T. way to write management's goals and objectives." The paper emphasizes the significance of objectives and the challenges involved in setting them.

The SMART acronym stands for:

SMART GOALS = Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic Timely

Leadership teams can specify specific objectives that need to be reached and then create the specific action that puts the objective in sequence. This process allows critical team members, such as department heads, to accomplish what needs to be done one step at a time, allowing for a productive work environment. Importantly, individual goals are synchronized with the goals of the organization.  In an ideal scenario, key departments or company teams would have their own set of objectives:

  • Specific – Be specific in your goal; this is the time when broad strokes do not serve you.  Continue to question yourself and push your team to ask if this goal is specific or if you can narrow it down.  The more specific the goal, the more precise the action plan, and the greater the success rate.

  • Measurable – Quantify an indicator of progress.

  • Action Plan & Assignable – What actions will be taken and specify who will do it.

  • Realistic – State which results can realistically be achieved, given available resources.

  • Time Schedule – Specify and calendar when the result(s) can be achieved and when follow-up meetings are needed to stay on track.

Slater Success will be examining the dynamics of specific goal-setting elements and what goes into strategic planning in the coming months, including branding, financial planning, and sustainable growth.
