13 Seconds of Focus

13 seconds was all quarterback Patrick Mahomes needed to secure a win two weeks ago when he found his team in overtime and then just two days ago, his team suffered a loss in overtime.

Such a rollercoaster of emotions in such a short span of time. After two consecutive years, the Kansas City Chiefs won’t be headed to the Super Bowl.

Just like business, leadership is about continuing to show up.

Even when it feels hopeless. Even when you don’t make it to the big game. Even when your plans don’t happen as expected.

How many times have you lost out on a big contract or not hit your revenue goals? Even if the year before, or even the month before, you did.

Maybe something completely out of your control happened recently. A speaking gig cancellation, a flight delay, a team member leaving unexpectedly, health concerns.

In business, we face obstacles and challenges that seem unfair all the time. We can’t respond with anything but action. We can’t let negativity take over. We take the lessons as learning curves and continue to stay in forward motion. As I have said before it is consistency that wins a long term race.

In a few weeks, I’ll be creating my annual Super Bowl newsletter. I always take inspiration from the game, the commercials, the halftime show and it’s one of my favorite newsletters to write all year.

The LA Rams (who found themselves in the big game in 2019 and lost) and the Cincinnati Bengals (who haven’t been to the big game since 1989) will face off. What a different story for both teams.

What is the story you need to focus on this month in your business?

Your number story?

Your team story?

Your marketing story?

Your mindset story?

Know your numbers.

Know your people.

Know your market.

Know your values.

Focus on the basics of business if you start feeling lost and simply get one mini-goal on your calendar today.

Put some actions around it, make decisions with clarity, reach out for support and celebrate your work. I am always on Team YOU!
