Over 100 people on LIVE and this happened...
I was on the live, we were talking and then...he was gone.
Ron Alvesteffer, President and CEO of Service Express, joined me last week on Slater Success Live, my LinkedIn show and over 100 people were logged in and listening live, when tech issues caused an interruption.
I found myself shifting from interview mode to speaking and presentation mode, while Ron’s team promptly got him back on, and it all went back to my training, do what you CAN do.
Yes, the interview stopped for a few minutes, so I continued with our train of conversation sharing my point of view on the discussion. You never have to worry about me and telling a story. I will always find one to tell.
No one left the live, everyone was patient, even cheering on Ron’s IT team. It was beautiful to see. Real life in full view!
Through this year of everything virtual and online, these things are bound to happen and it honestly made the interview that much more authentic and fun. Ron joked it was almost like we planned it to showcase how he is not a tech guy but has a great team around him. I love it!
Ron’s energy was electric and he shared so much valuable insight in less than 30 minutes.
His team really showed up and was commenting about how wonderful the company is and it’s a true testament to his stellar leadership!
Some of the highlights I wanted to pull are below, but please watch the entire interview if you get a chance, it’s packed with wisdom.
-Ron did weekly video updates to his entire team throughout the pandemic. He wanted them to hear him, see him, instead of just sending an email or memo.
This is a leadership lesson important during all times. Effective communication with your team is vital, whether it’s a small team of two or a team of thousands spanning many states. If your company culture is all about staying connected, everyone feels like part of the team and knows their contributions are appreciated.
-Ron mentioned it’s fine to fail forward and that he is the first to admit when he makes a mistake. It’s all about the learning lesson afterward. He said “those who make the most mistakes win.”
I could NOT agree more. I have made many mistakes in my journey as a leader and every one has provided me with a perspective I wouldn’t have had otherwise.
-Ron said interruptions are a part of life and it’s how you react to them and how you move forward that’s important.
We’ve all found ourselves with a life interrupted over the past year plus now. It’s about deciding how we keep moving, keep taking action and keep working toward our goals. It might take longer and we might have to take a different route, but we can still get there.
