Leading Your Business in the Dark
What a crazy title, right? But, seriously, have you been on Space Mountain in Disney World?
That awesome, spaced-themed rollercoaster that has you flying through the pitch black, indoors?
It’s scary, right?
But if you turned out the lights and you knew exactly what twists and turns were coming next, it really wouldn’t be that bad, would it?
It doesn’t go upside down or take you in a major loop, it’s fairly simple once you take away the “not being able to see” element.
That is also business and a perfect tie in as we approach Halloween. What scares you?
You get on a rollercoaster every day in business and you are excited to get on that ride, but it doesn't eliminate the fear.
We choose to go on rides because we love the thrill and business success gives us those same thrills, just in a different way.
Sometimes though, we get stuck on the top of a hill and we aren’t sure if we should go forward or lean back. Stopping on that hill for too long can be a real detriment to your business, so being able to make the decision quickly keeps the adrenaline pumping and the ride in motion.
Great leaders know when they are looking at fear, when to stop, when to keep going and how to continue on the journey, hands up and either screaming or laughing.
It’s been a long time since my kids were out trick or treating, but I remember them coming home with tons of candy and lots of stories about costumes.
If they saw a scary clown or a weird mask, it gave them a fright. It was a very visible fear.
In our businesses, we don’t always see the scary thing right in front of us. We had no idea the pandemic was coming, and even if we did, we still had to face it head on.
Things can scare you, but you can’t let them stop you.
When we take consistent action, when we stay on the ride, we find our next step and figure out our next plan.
Have a “boo-tiful” day. We had to get a little Halloween pun in there, right?
