When Plans Change, Adapt + Move Forward

As you know, most of my family has been quarantining together for many months. My husband and I, along with my daughter and her fiance and my mom. And currently, my son and his girlfriend are visiting from LA.

If you know me, you know I do love to cook and using fresh vegetables from our garden has really been amazing, but this past weekend, all we wanted to do was get out! I wanted to eat food that I didn’t prepare and didn’t have to clean up.

When plans change adapt move forward

We made a reservation for Saturday night to sit outdoors at one of our favorite places. We had already looked at the menu and decided on what we wanted. It was going to be so delicious and a much needed break from eating at our own table inside our four walls.

It started to rain a few hours before we were set to go. I called in and the restaurant said we could certainly eat indoors, but the outside was too drenched.

We weren’t comfortable doing an inside meal with all of us, so I called another place to see if we could secure a spot on their outdoor patio. No luck.

You know what we ended up doing - eating tomato soup (which I made earlier due to the plethora of tomates I had on hand) and grilled cheese.

Was it gourmet? No.

Did I still have to clean up? Yes.

Was it still wonderful? Of course.

Spending this time with my family is precious. We are going to talk about this years and years from now. I can see us laughing about the time we all sat around and ate grilled cheese and soup and I know we will miss that quality time we had together.

This was just another lesson for me in being flexible and adapting which is really the motto for 2020.

When you find yourself expecting something exciting and it doesn't come to pass, celebrate the small milestones. Life, and business, are not just about the big things. They are more so about the small and simple things. These small and simple things gain traction, momentum and have a long-lasting impact.

Being a great leader means taking whatever situation is thrown your way and making the best out of it. Just like a lot of tomatoes equals tomato soup, think about the possibilities sitting right in front of you and get cooking!
