Seven Teaching Moments from The 2020 Academy Awards
I love award shows and I always find so many inspiring and impactful moments in them that I have to write them out and share! My team was sharing their personal thoughts and they each added one of their takeaways, too. Collaboration at its best!
1. Parasite winning Best Picture. This was the first foreign-language film to ever win the Academy Award for Best Picture. That shows the power of a great story. Are you telling a great story in your business? Subtitles didn’t stop audiences and critics from embracing this masterpiece. In fact, at the Golden Globes, director Bong Joon Ho said something I really loved. He said, “Once you overcome the 1-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.” Think about the barriers you feel are stopping you right now and start changing the narrative.
2. Renée Zellweger’s speech after winning Best Actress. She spoke about her parents being immigrants and “coming here with nothing but each other and a belief in the American dream.” How amazing it must be for them to see their daughter winning such a prestigious award. This is all about stepping into what is possible and always dreaming big. It also teaches us to step into the iconic roles of our lives, just as Renée Zellweger did when she stepped into the role of Judy Garland in Judy.
3. Brad Pitt’s speech after winning Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He gave a shout-out to the stunt coordinators, told Leonardo DiCaprio he’d ride on his coattails any day and dedicated the award to his kids saying they color everything he does. A great reminder to share our success and happiness with those that support us along the way and make sure they know how much they mean to us.
4. Hildur Guðnadóttir winning for Best Original Score. She is only the third woman to win in this category and she closed her speech speaking directly to women and girls saying, “To the girls, to the women, to the mothers, to the daughters who hear the music bubbling within, please speak up. We need to hear your voices." What a fantastic reminder that needs no explanation at all.
5. How songs make a movie. I really enjoyed the montage of films and the songs that make us instantly think of that movie or vice versa. What are the “songs” or services you are offering that really set your business apart? Are you playing the right ones?
Number six comes from my team member, Starr:
6.Jane Fonda presenting. It’s great to see her working successfully in the business at age 82. She’s had such a lovely career, including her most recent work on the Netflix Original show, Grace and Frankie. Her long-time friend, Lily Tomlin, also stars in the show and that shows the power of a great relationship. You might remember them together in the movie 9 to 5 with Dolly Parton back in 1980. A great reminder to find the people you work with well and trust and keep that relationship strong. That can be clients, team members, networking groups and more.
Number seven comes from my team member, Tara:
7. Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph presenting. Can these women be any funnier? I absolutely loved how they took two categories that might not get as much recognition as Actress or Actor or Best Picture and engaged the audience with their humor. They presented Best Production Design and Best Costume Design, all while basically performing a SNL-like skit including singing a mash-up of songs with clothes lyrics in it. This is a great reminder to have FUN, share your talents and bring genuine personality to everything you do in business.
Did you watch the show? I would love to hear your thoughts! If we haven’t had a chance to connect lately, please email or call and let’s get something on the schedule.
